Herstories from Portsmouth is a gathering together of tales of activism, personal agency, feminism and broader campaigning by women in and around the city of Portsmouth. Its purpose is to redress the predominantly masculinist history of Portsmouth, a city proud of its Naval Bases and famous Dockyard, but nonetheless, a city where women’s contributions have largely gone unsung.
The project’s ambition is to provide printed and online records of personal writing which expresses women’s important and diverse enhancements to the fabric of the city.
Women have laboured tirelessly to improve local conditions for themselves, their families and their communities, and in doing so have overcome difficulties at home, in the workplace and in society. The subject matter of herstories extends to all sorts of areas where women have been influential. This includes: fighting the council to improve housing, campaigning for peace, arguing for equality, surviving domestic violence, demanding better working conditions, overcoming neglect, compensating for inferior education for girls and much, much more.
