The idea for Herstories from Portsmouth developed out of articles published in early feminist magazines of the British 1970s Women’s Liberation Movement, where women giving their testimonials found this form of creative writing deeply empowering. Expressing their life stories made them feel heard.
This website will include herstories from those who’ve lived in Portsmouth, previously or all of their lives; those who’ve moved to the city from elsewhere in Britain; and those who’ve migrated here from wherever in the world. We encourage all individuals identifying as women, and men wishing to write about the contributions of women, to participate. It’s our hope that, by publishing these herstories, we’ll help to empower the women of Portsmouth and that, through publication, women’s tremendous contributions to this city will be visible and valued.
